Ouray Ice Climbing Festival

|
Darren quit his job with the military.  They gave him a patriotic plaque...made in China.
This weekend we road tripped the four and a half hours to the world famous ice climbing mecca of Ouray, Colorado for the Ouray Ice Climbing Festival.  People from all over the states and world travel each year to take courses, watch or compete in competitions, and meet fellow ice climbers.  Our friends Ryan, Viren, and Julie all drove out from the Eastern Sierra to join in the droves of people trying to find an open route.  During the day, Darren took a few classes while I joined the rest of the buds to climb.  On Friday evening we enjoyed the natural hot springs at the Holiday Inn, while Saturday night we joined a silent auction (with items like an ice axe signed by Sir Edmund Hillary and a piton signed by Yvon Chounard.  I wanted the piton; Darren thought I was crazy.  I actually did bid on a puffy jacket, but they didn't see my final raised hand.  It was sad.) followed with presentations by Kelly Cordes and another fellow who biked across somewhere very remote in Pakistan or some such country.  It was awesome, and most of us caught free swag that was thrown out into the audience between activities.

Nathan, Jessie, and Genevieve joined us for a few hours on Saturday to go out to eat and assist in a lengthy tire issue.
