2008 Fun Book Life List

|
I haven't really had much time to read much for myself this year, but I have a horrible memory and just want to write down a few of the books I've read or mostly read along with some favorite quotes from them. If my English degree taught me anything it was to "read with my right hand" and take notes, underline, make comments by passages in books that catch my attention. So this will be a blog in progress while I find time over this christmas break to copy the passages of which I've taken note. For now I think I'm just going to list some of the books to get things going.

1. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig
2. As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner
3. Adventures in Missing the Point: How the Culture Controlled Church Neutered the Gospel by Brian D. McLaren & Tony Campolo
4. The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gilman
5. On the Road by Jack Kerouac
6. The Jazz Age by Max Bogart

Here is my reading wish list for the new year:

1. The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky
2. The Shack by William P. Young...Darren tells me it is good
3. For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway. I've tried to read his stuff before and gotten thoroughly bored. However, with our upcoming trip to Spain, I feel like I should give it another try because it supposedly deals with the Spanish Civil War.
4. Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
5. The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan--a children's book my sister lent me. I think it'll be some good non-cerebral fun, while reminding me about Greek mythology!
6. The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan
7. Climbing Free by Lynn Hill--it is sad that I still haven't read this

One Year, Woo Hoo!

I remember (in no order whatsoever): Spanish Christmas music, log fires at his house, him bringing the coat I'd left in his car after our first date to my Neuroanatomy lab after I'd just been talking about him with everyone, the pallet campfire at Red Rocks, hours on the phone through Extended Network areas, wishing he were on trips and getting severe DD withdrawal syndrome, "clinkies", "Coffee BREAK!," butterfly handshake, passing along the need to periodically use lip medication, him climbing with me and 8 other girls at JTree, multi-pitch routes: being a beached whale on Corrugation Corner as he watched me wriggle; revealing his secret past as a oboe playing sandwich artist, Bible studies, hamstring stretching, stoplights run on red, being stopped by cops at the airport and the highway, singing about the healing water of Tahquitz, illegal camping in JTree, getting my hair bird pooped on at Sea World, him bringing me flowers to me right before my football game in front of my fellow PT colleagues, sitting backstage and learning the ropes at the Gretchen Wilson show and grooving to the band outside afterwards, getting chai brought to my bed in the early morn before tests, the most fun flash cards ever created, swing dancing, salsa lessons in Redlands, him calming me down after I bonked on Mt. Conness, studying with me at his house, on trips, at coffee shops, at Jtree while he bouldered; picnics on his front lawn, in his back yard the first time he said the three words, American Gladiators ("Gladiator ready?"), snorkeling and horseback riding in Mexico, nights walking on the beach and swimming in the ocean in Mexico, soup and Bimbo bread in Mexico, weeping as my hands thawed on his stomach on top of San Gregornio, heel jogging down San Jacinto, "Is it not?," eating Thai food in the park and then enjoying Pink Berry and watching the Simpsons in his car for Valentine's Day, My birthday present after learning about Mammoth's many ski lifts, playing football in the street at JTree, feeling awkward for people at Improv, hot springing in a puddle sized stream in Bishop, trudging up train-style White Mountain in insane wind, freezing in TN, Rook nights, "I feel strongly about this," finally doing the Chasm of Doom with about 12 other people, cliff jumping, swimming and tubing in Belize; listening to the rain in Red Rocks, dressing ridiculously for the Elton John concert, theme rock climbing multi-pitch routes, Geronimo!, him meeting my entire family at Christmas, introducing him to bluegrass at the Signal Mountain Opry, announcing to my ctown buds that I had a boyfriend, cats, being the "trophy" girlfriend at his high school reunion, Squamish, exploring Great Stirrup Cay through mangroves, spitting conchs, and spiky rocks; operatic hugs, the beginning of 21, eating sandwiches on top of the sign near Tahquitz, Smelly Cat ears, trying to lay down as many new blue lines as possible on the GPS, quirkiness, adventure, caring, loving, etc., etc.

The Drama of the Phantom Spires

|
Routes Climbed at the Phantom Spires:

1. Gingerbread 5.7 on the Upper Spire
2. Over Easy 5.7 on the Middle Spire
3. The Prow 5.10b on the Middle Spire
4. 3 bolt arete 5.10a on the Shark Tooth
5. 1 bolt arete 5.8 on the Shark Tooth

Darren and I enjoy following the theme of whatever climb we are climbing. For example, when we climbed Birdland in Red Rocks we chirped and "ca-cawed" quite frequently. While at the Phantom Spires we, of course, belted out "The Phantom of the Opera" song with full fervor. Amusingly the next day Darren saw on a SuperTopo thread that with our songs we had "pissed off" two guys climbing near us. I feel bad to have disturbed their wilderness experience, but not bad enough to change my themed climbing. You can be sure that if I am going to the Cookie Cliff in Yosemite, I will still be hauling up gingersnaps and snickerdoodles with me! Come along, and I will share them with you :).

I am the phantom of the spires!!
